Skin is the outer covering of the body. It is the largest organ of the integumentary system. Skin has up to seven layers of ectodermal tissue and guards the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs. There are more than 3,000 skin disorders that affect people daily. Some skin conditions can be minor, temporary and easily treated. Others can be very serious or even deadly.
An infection of the skin can be caused by bacteria, fungus, viruses or parasites. Your skin may be sore, itchy, oozing or breaking out. You may have rashes, hives, inflammation, infection, or allergic reactions anywhere on your body. Learn more about holistic treatments for skin conditions in our Healing Portal.
