Meditation

In the hectic, fast paced lives we live in, meditation can be more of a distractions then the quietness of inner solace. It can be a challenge, but if you practice and plan for meditation time, the rewards will be beneficial beyond your imagination.

I was asked the question of how to meditate when you can not go out and root deeply into the Earth. What then?

Roots

Like the surrounding forest,
I am a creature of the Earth plane
in ascension to the stars.
A tree grows through me
rooted in my heart
where all journeys begin.
Earth, hands and heart befriend head
growing, undulating toward the light
releasing, emptying thought and story
returning, embracing the essence of infinity.
Helen Maupin

“Leaning back, closing my eyes feeling that trance feeling as my fingers and toes become roots. Roots that burrows deep, finding their way into the deep rich soil. Roots grasping firmly into the dirt, embedding themselves.

Desperately seeking out the coolness of the earth. Feeling a gentle breeze blow across, tilting my chin upwards as the light of the sun’s rays wash through me; becoming as a flower. A flower blooming vibrantly below the brilliant blue sky.

Grounded into the earth from where I come, yet reaching upwards to the celestial skies to where I will go. The sensation-centering deep within my mind, within my very soul. Calming and consoling me.” (Excerpt The Witches Child)

In the hectic, fast paced lives we live in, meditation can be more of a distractions then the quietness of inner solace. It can be a challenge, but if you practice and plan for meditation time, the rewards will be beneficial beyond your imagination.

To start meditation in your home, create a personal sanctuary that will assist you in blocking out the “chaos” that surrounds the every day life for many.

By doing this one action for yourself, you will create an atmosphere that will reinforce your desire to nurture yourself, relax and become quiet in your mind.  An added bonus is that this will also allow you practice in setting boundaries with those around you.

The personal sanctuary can be as simple or elaborate as you would like to make it. Figuring out where to “build” this sanctuary is the most difficult part of meditation.

Here Are Several Points To Consider In Creating Your Personal Sanctuary:

  • Find a place where you can go and ensure privacy
  • A separate area with a door that can be closed
  • Setting a time schedule to follow will ensure that you build meditation into your daily routine.
  • Discover the practical way that is most comfortable for you to be in during meditation. For some, it is sitting in a relaxed position with their feet on the floor, for others it may be laying down. There is no right or wrong way to meditate.
  • Try to set up meaningful symbols to focus upon whether it is a simple lit candle or a complete altar of items.
  • Dim light rather than bright light usually works best.

Creating a personal sanctuary should be enjoyable. Use meaningful items you already own as your focal points. The important key is to find where you can connect with your inner self the best.

Again for some it will be a quiet, clutter free space inside and for others it will be a place that can replicate nature. Either will soothe the soul. The most important aspect is create the space and follow through with an action plan of practicing meditation daily.

I have taught meditation in the middle of retail mall sitting area. The thought is that if one can find the inner sanctuary with the distraction of people in a busy mall, then one can find the inner sanctuary anywhere.

Nature, fires, the ocean, football stadiums, shopping malls, or a quiet reflective area – the key is to practice and create your inner sanctuary.
